Introducing Dolly | Adopting a Retired Racing Greyhound

I’m so excited to show y’all the newest member of our family! It’s been a bit of a process, and we weren’t sure if it would work out, so I didn’t want to mention it until we actually had her. But now she’s here! This is Dolly. She is a 3 year-old retired racing greyhound. We brought her home on Saturday.

*Disclaimer- I’m NOT an expert on greyhounds or retired greyhounds, this is just my experience with the process so far.

Adopting a retired greyhound is a bit different than just going to the shelter and adopting a dog. They have organizations that get dogs from the race tracks (usually in Florida) after they’re “retired” from racing and then adopt them to families. These dogs lived their whole lives in kennels with a bunch of other greyhounds, so they’ve never lived in a house before and a lot of them have never seen other kinds of dogs, or cats. It’s a lot like bringing a little alien into your house because everything is so new and different for them.

We have two different greyhound adoptions in our state, and we originally applied with one and our application was rejected due to our yard not being fenced. Now, every organization has their own rules and process, so we decided to give it a shot with the other group. They were great! They have been nothing but friendly and helpful to us. Every month they hold a little meet and greet where potential adopters can meet the available dogs. So we actually met Dolly a month ago and fell in love with her!

After we met Dolly, the organization had her spayed, vaccinated, and she was given a clean bill of health. Then we got to take her home a month later at the next meet and greet. She’s been such a good dog for us. We have to pay extra care to her interactions with the cats in the beginning as greyhounds typically have a high prey drive. There have been no incidents so far, she was already crate trained from living in the kennels, and she’s just been exploring her new house and neighborhood!

So now y’all can expect to see plenty of cat AND dog pictures here!
